Psychotherapy & Counselling
We all experience problems on a day-to-day basis, but we can ably manage many of the things we encounter. However, life can get very difficult at times and this could be because of a recent major life event, perhaps through bereavement and loss, or breakdown of a relationship or maybe it could be due to things that occurred in your childhood, such as feeling unsupported, unloved and insecure. If you have experienced a particularly traumatic event(s), then your challenges may be quite complex and severely impact your life and you may be struggling to cope.
Psychotherapy can guide you through these troubled waters and transport you to a place where you acquire greater self-acceptance and peace. Although we are not the sum of our experiences, they sometimes serve to define us and impact our relationships and mental health; psychotherapy will support you in navigating a new course. By exploring the past and working together in the present, we can create positive change. I will be alongside you, shoulder to shoulder, on this journey and provide you with unwavering support in a non-judgemental and safe environment, where you can share whatever is on your mind and work through your burden.
There are no expectations of you within the therapy room and this allows you to focus entirely on yourself and how you truly feel; without any concern for what the other person is thinking – you are free to be your true authentic self during our sessions at all times.
My culturally sensitive approach to counselling is integrative and I work in a way which is suitable for your needs as a unique individual. I generally incorporate person-centred and emotion-focused therapies into my practice as they are proven to be successful for a broad range of psychological difficulties.
Person-Centred Therapy
"When someone really hears you without passing judgment on you, without trying to take responsibility for you, without trying to mould you, it feels damn good..."
Dr. Carl Rogers
Person-centred therapy (PCT) is a non-directive and empowering therapeutic approach, which views you as the expert in your own life and fundamentally believes that you have the capacity to make positive changes. Working collaboratively, I can support you in safely exploring and emotionally connecting with what is happening for you so that you can reach a greater understanding of yourself and the experiences/issues you have encountered or have suppressed/denied. This will allow you to move positively forward with a strong sense of self-belief.
I provide a safe and supportive space, free of judgment, where you can experience uncomfortable and painful feelings, make sense of them and then start to make healthy changes in your life, improve your well-being and achieve personal growth.
Emotion-Focused Therapy
Emotions are always about something; they always point to something in the person's situation...past or present
Sarbin, 1989
Emotions inform us what is important to us and what we need or want, which helps us figure out what we need to do. At their best, emotions are healthy and help us thrive and survive. However, at their worst, they can become damaging, and we might feel inferior; create anxiety about things that are not realistically going to happen; or withdraw from others making us feel isolated. Additionally, we could become very submissive or a people-pleaser. This therapy will support you in understanding your feelings and where they have originated from. Through a series of steps, I can help you transform your difficult emotions into helpful ones leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
Similar to person-centred therapy, this is not about quick fixes; it’s about getting to the heart of the matter, however painful, and creating lasting change. Although emotion-focused therapy can be successfully applied to a broad range of psychological issues, it is particularly effective in supporting clients suffering from anxiety, depression, relationship problems and trauma.
